Workshop targets migrant communities

An emergency preparedness workshop being held in Queenstown this coming Tuesday is partly focusing on migrant communities.

The ‘Good and Prepared’ workshop’s being organised by New Zealand Pink Cross and Queenstown council’s ‘Welcoming Communities’ initiative.

It’s additionally being co-facilitated by native ‘Good and Prepared’ champions Carol Morgan and Jean-Marc Bouvet who’re linked with Queenstown’s South American and French-speaking communities, respectively.

Steve King, who heads Pink Cross’ regional assist group, says migrant communities are at higher threat in emergencies as a result of they’re unaware of native hazards and will miss emergency messaging as occurred through the early phases of Covid.

King provides their attain into Queenstown has lessened as a result of the Lakes Multicultural Collective has curtailed its actions because it’s been unsuccessful in attracting funding.

“We need to get a very good pool of volunteers established right here who can take ‘Good and Prepared’ messaging again into their communities.

“So we wish individuals who could be comfortable to be skilled to be our ‘Good and Prepared’ champions and emergency preparedness messengers, when you like.”

King notes Queenstown council’s additionally been actively growing emergency plans due to this space’s proximity to the alpine fault — “and geologists tells us it’s going to be when, not if”.

Tuesday’s workshop is on the Queenstown Occasions Centre’s assembly room from 6 until 7.30pm, following gentle refreshments at 5.30pm.
