Whereas the LGBTQ+ group and allies celebrated June as Delight month throughout a lot of the nation, one group in Central California was dwelling in a unique actuality.

Following a 3-2 vote on June 16 by its Board of Supervisors, Fresno County acknowledged June as “Conventional Nuclear Household Month,” declaring that the nuclear household unit is “God’s excellent design” that aligns with Fresno’s “conventional” values.

However for individuals like Supervisor Luis Chavez, who was elected to the board in November 2024 and stated he is because of take over as chair subsequent 12 months, final month’s vote was an anomaly that shouldn’t be repeated, he stated.

For Chavez, he stated, the decision was private. He and his household have opened up their residence to foster youngsters for the final seven years.

“We’ve taken in youngsters that weren’t welcomed in properties as a result of they did determine as both lesbian, homosexual and we truly had a nonbinary little one that stayed with us, too, in our residence, and it bothered me as a result of this language particularly excluded the superb foster mother and father that now we have that simply occurred to be LGBTQ,” he stated.

Chavez stated he was the one Fresno County supervisor to attend this 12 months’s Fresno Delight Parade, a celebration that brings 20,000 individuals to town’s Tower District. For somebody who had attended the festivity barely per week prior, the decision proposed by board chair Garry Bredefeld was divisive, not unifying.

“No person is against the quote unquote conventional household, I believe a variety of people come from that,” Chavez stated. “The language that was used was simply exclusionary and made it a degree to marginalize and really feel that we weren’t going to acknowledge LGBTQ people in our group.”

Bredefeld launched the decision after the governors of Tennessee and Indiana signed proclamations declaring June “Nuclear Household Month” of their respective states.

“I believe the LGBT motion is making an attempt to pressure their agenda on different individuals, and this was a method of claiming, ‘Hey, look, you possibly can have your parade and your month, however we’re additionally going to acknowledge conventional households as effectively,’” Bredefeld stated.

When it got here time to vote initially, not the entire supervisors fully agreed. Supervisor Nathan Magsig moved to amend the decision so as to add language recognizing single mother and father, grandparents and foster mother and father.

“I believe as a group, we must be aware of what issues are most useful to our youngsters and future generations, however recognizing on the similar time, too, that issues occur in life,” Magsig stated.

Magsig’s modification was adopted. However when Chavez requested the inclusion of LGBTQ+ mother and father, he was denied — cementing his “no” vote on the decision. The opposite opposing vote got here from Supervisor Brian Pacheco, who declined to remark.

In the long run, the decision outlined the normal nuclear household as “one husband, one spouse and any organic, adopted, or fostered youngsters” and stated “single moms and dads, grandparents, foster mother and father, and people mother and father which have joint custody” are “critically essential to elevating wholesome youngsters and are acknowledged for his or her sacrifice, onerous work and devotion.”

Advocates say that for the county’s LGBTQ+ residents, the vote may very well be seen as one other instance of their marginalization.

“It’s alarming,” stated Jorge Reyes Salinas, communications director for Equality California. “It’s scary for anybody who doesn’t match this mould that some individuals consider is the suitable mould to be in society.”

The decision sparked tense debate through the assembly’s public feedback, with a number of individuals talking in favor or towards. One girl argued that each month must be household month, whereas one other argued that there have been many different points, like healthcare, that ought to take precedence.

Bredefeld stated his reasoning for pushing ahead the decision was not to remove from anybody who needed to rejoice Delight.

Slightly, he stated, he needed to rejoice conventional households, too.

For the document:

3:28 p.m. July 1, 2026A earlier model of this text attributed a quote to Supervisor Garry Bredefeld that he didn’t make. His assertion has been up to date.

Chavez, as a member of county governance, stated that this was not the way in which to make use of their platform.

“The truth that we’re pretending like they don’t exist, that hurts our youngsters, as a result of it sends them the message that they’re unfit of being acknowledged by a authorities entity for them being who they’re,” Chavez stated.

Reyes Salinas echoed that sentiment.

“I believe, now greater than ever, communities and voters want to concentrate, and we have to see our leaders for who they really are,” Reyes Salinas stated.

There’s disagreement between the supervisors over whether or not the decision was indefinite or simply for this final month. Bredefeld maintains every June going ahead can be “Conventional Nuclear Household Month,” although the decision didn’t embody language saying that may be the case yearly going ahead.

With that in thoughts, Chavez stated he plans to withstand any push subsequent 12 months for one more decision, when he stated he’s anticipated to be the board chair.

“An injustice anyplace is an injustice in all places,” Chavez stated.
