Author E. Jean Carroll has obtained some $5.625 million in her sexual abuse and defamation case in opposition to President Trump — a fee that was delayed for years as Trump filed appeals within the civil case.

A federal jury in Manhattan awarded Carroll $5 million in damages in 2023, after discovering Trump chargeable for sexually abusing Carroll and defaming her. The ultimate fee contains three years’ price of curiosity.

“Three years in the past, a unanimous nine-person jury discovered President Trump chargeable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan stated in an announcement to NPR. “At this time, we’re happy to report that she has obtained the damages fee the jury awarded her on account of that verdict.”

The White Home referred NPR’s requests for remark to Trump’s private legal professionals. These attorneys didn’t instantly reply to messages searching for touch upon the case.

In a 2019 memoir, Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her within the dressing room of a Manhattan division retailer in 1996. After she leveled that cost, Trump denied the declare, stated he’d by no means met Carroll, and described her as a liar motivated by ulterior targets. Carroll then filed a lawsuit in opposition to Trump accusing him of defamation.

A federal appeals court has upheld a 2023 jury verdict that found Donald Trump sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll. Carroll, right, leaves after the first day of her civil trial against the former President at Manhattan Federal Court on April 25, 2023 in New York City.

Courtroom data filed on Tuesday present that the cash was paid to Carroll and her authorized crew, after U.S. District Decide Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the president to pay Carroll. His order final week got here after the Supreme Courtroom declined to listen to Trump’s attraction of the end result.

A bigger potential fee continues to be looming within the dispute between Carroll and Trump: an $83 million award in a separate defamation lawsuit filed by Carroll. The president has appealed that final result; to this point, federal courts have upheld the award.
