Dems Whistle Past Platner Graveyard as CNN’s Cornish Pushes Janet Mills Option
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Democrats are in full damage-control mode over Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, at the same time as recent allegations of unsettling conduct towards girls proceed to swirl. In the meantime, CNN This Morning host Cornish is pushing an alternative choice to the politically-wounded Platner. Cornish sounded that theme from her opening phrases in Friday’s Group Chat section on the Maine race: “The query this morning for Democrats: is it too late to chop bait?”

Or shuck an oyster?

On Wednesday, Platner met with numerous Democratic senators to debate the scenario, and Cornish performed clips of numerous them commenting after the assembly. Tina Smith of Minnesota managed to maintain a straight face in response to CNN reporter Manu Raju’s query as to whether or not they requested Platner whether or not there have been any extra sneakers to drop:

“No, we did not speak about that. The principle factor we talked about was, actually, what his, why it’s that he is been connecting a lot with Maine voters.”

Riiight! Neglect all these scandals, Graham. Simply inform us about how nice you’re!

Smith’s patently implausible denial was flatly contradicted by this report in The Wall Avenue Journal, “Senators Privately Ask Platner Whether or not New Allegations Will Emerge”:

“Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders requested Platner if any extra allegations would emerge in opposition to the embattled Democratic candidate, based on folks accustomed to the dialogue. Platner stated there weren’t any.”

Talking of Sanders, in a clip Cornish performed of his interview with Kaitlin Collins, Bernie performed up Platner’s army report:

“This man served 4 excursions of obligation in Iraq and Afghanistan. He went by some very bloody and horrible conditions. He has acknowledged that he got here again with PTSD.”

Bernie Sanders, born-again army fanboy–who knew?

However again to Audie and her theme o’ the day: out with Platner, in with Maine Governor Janet Mills. Early within the section, Cornish famous Mills’ current feedback to the Portland Press Herald: “Folks have the impression that I withdrew or dropped out, however I merely suspended energetic campaigning. I am nonetheless on the poll.”

Underlined Cornish: “So, there’s an alternative choice.”

Later, when panelist Noel King [like Cornish, an NPR veteran] advised Democrats’ “solely possibility” was to stay with Platner and “maintain it going,” Cornish pushed again forcefully:

“It is not the one possibility! The opposite possibility is Janet Mills. Come on. It could possibly be!”

The episode completely captures the Democrats’ and pleasant media’s awkward place. They wish to embrace Platner’s “I used to be a nasty man who noticed the sunshine” redemption story — full with army service and PTSD — but cannot ignore the recent baggage threatening a key Senate race in opposition to incumbent Susan Collins.

Therefore the general public assist for Platner combined with non-public jitters and not-so-subtle floating of Mills as a Plan B.

Curiously, each New York Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, uttered the identical rigorously calculated line, expressing confidence that “We [Democrats] will win Maine.” Lacking: any point out of Platner. Appears like they is likely to be on Staff Cornish-for-Mills!

Here is the transcript. Click on “broaden” to learn:

CNN This Morning6/5/266:04 am EDT

AUDIE CORNISH: So the query this morning for Democrats: is it too late to chop bait?

KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND: I am very optimistic we’re gonna win Maine.

MANU RAJU: Did you speak about any of the sneakers to drop that would come out on this race? Or, or, or did he attempt to get forward on any of that?

TINA SMITH: No, we did not speak about that. The principle factor we talked about was, actually, what his, why it’s that he is been connecting a lot with, with Maine voters.

PETER WELCH: He is accepting the burden that he is gotta give his rationalization of that to Maine voters, they usually resolve.

KAITLIN COLLINS: Are you frightened about the rest popping out about him?

BERNIE SANDERS: I do not know. All I can say is, look, I am certain he is not a saint. And by the best way, let’s not overlook, he has acknowledged, this man served 4 excursions of obligation in Iraq and Afghanistan. He went by some very bloody and horrible conditions. He has acknowledged that he got here again with PTSD.

CORNISH: Becoming a member of me now within the group chat, Elliot Williams, CNN authorized analyst and former federal prosecutor, Carine Hajjar, Washington Submit editorial board member, and Noel King, co-host and editorial director of the “In the present day, Defined” podcast. Thanks guys for being right here.

So one of many issues I am taking a look at is response, response on the left, response from Democrats. The opposite factor I am taking a look at is, what subsequent? As a result of this election goes to occur in just a few days, and earlier this week, Governor Janet Mills instructed the Portland Press earlier that, quote, “Folks have the impression that I withdrew or dropped out, however I merely suspended energetic campaigning. I am nonetheless on the poll.”

So there’s an alternative choice.

. . .

Does it matter if the problematic half is the story? Which means, his entire total spiel has been, “I used to be a nasty man, I noticed the sunshine, and also you need extra guys like me seeing the sunshine, Democrats.” And, what I imply? The, the form of like, I may have been within the Manosphere, however look, I am right here, working as a Democrat. And what do Democrats do with that story that they have been telling?

NOEL KING: Preserve it going, I believe, is the one possibility at this level.

CORNISH:  It is not the one possibility! The opposite possibility is Janet Mills. Come on. It could possibly be!
