The Labour chief nonetheless backed Lords abolition for a piece of his time in opposition — although he knew current Labour friends may need a view or two about that.

“We have to present how we’ll do issues in another way. Reforming our second chamber needs to be part of that,” the Labour chief stated.

2022: Sturdy structure

The next month, Labour’s plans received a tough launch. In a blinding (nicely, for Starmer) press convention, he promised the “greatest ever switch of energy from Westminster to the British individuals.” Sturdy stuff.

Starmer received get together bigwig and ex-PM Gordon Brown to pen a report backing constitutional change — together with the abolition of the Home of Lords. Starmer stated an unelected chamber was “indefensible” and an elected home could be created “with a powerful mission.”
