Police renew appeals into man’s 1991 disappearance

Andrew Maaka disappeared immediately one Tuesday in west Auckland almost 35 years in the past, ceasing all contact together with his household.

Regardless of an open police investigation, nobody has seen or heard from the identified Head Hunters gang affiliate in that point.

Investigators suspect foul play. Now, Waitematā Police are renewing public appeals for info.

Andrew Michael Maaka, who was 29 years previous on the time, was formally reported lacking to Henderson Police by household in early 1992.

Detective Inspector Callum McNeill says the circumstances have been thought of suspicious from the outset.

“On the time of his disappearance, it was identified that Mr Maaka had been concerned in felony networks which created clear issues for his security,” he says.

Maaka’s final identified sighting was on November 5, 1991, on View Street in Henderson.

That location is the headquarters of the West Auckland Chapter of the Head Hunters.

Police initially handled the matter as a lacking individual’s case, elevating to a suspected murder investigation.

“There have been no confirmed sightings or contact from Mr Maaka since his disappearance,” McNeill says.

“The knowledge and intelligence gathered by investigators over this time has solely heightened our suspicions, resulting in the assumption he has doubtless succumbed to foul play.”

Police consider there are individuals who have details about what occurred to Maaka they usually’re urged to come back ahead now.

“Now we have obtained info over time pointing to particular people and areas which may be linked to the case,” McNeill says.

“There will probably be folks that also maintain very important info that may help us in in search of closure for Mr Maaka’s whānau 35 years on.

“Anybody who has details about Andrew Maaka, his actions in late 1991 or any occasions linked to his disappearance ought to come ahead.”

Waitematā Police acknowledge all those that have come ahead over many many years with info.

“Time doesn’t diminish the significance of this case or the necessity to deliver closure for Mr Maaka’s family members.”
