‘High risk’ offender arrested in Dunedin

Police fired a shot throughout an incident at a Dunedin service station tonight of their efforts to catch a person they describe as a “excessive danger” offender.

A 46-year-old man was later arrested.

The incident occurred at a Z service station in Kaikorai Valley Rd about 6pm. 

Superintendent Jason Guthrie, Southern District Commander, stated in an announcement the person had been sought in relation to a sequence of offences dedicated within the Otago Coastal Space in current days.

“Officers concerned within the operation to find the person sighted him at a industrial premises on Kaikorai Valley Highway at roughly 6pm and tried to apprehend him.

“The offender drove his automobile in the direction of the patrol automotive and officers in his efforts to keep away from arrest. In response, police deployed a variety of tactical choices together with one shot from a police pistol”, Supt Guthrie stated.

“No different pictures had been fired within the incident and no person was injured.”

The person then fled the realm in a automobile later discovered within the suburb of Brockville. 

“Highway spikes had been efficiently deployed, and the offender fled on foot right into a bush space. He was apprehended quickly after by a police canine staff within the Fraser’s Gully space,” Supt Guthrie stated.

Earlier this night, police requested the general public to maintain away from Three Mile Hill and Brockville as officers searched within the cordoned space.

Cordons can be lifted tonight. 

“Police wish to reassure the neighborhood that there is no such thing as a ongoing public security danger following this incident,” Supt Guthrie stated.

“This was a really dynamic incident involving an offender who was extremely motivated to keep away from arrest and police workers are recommended for his or her efforts in safely resolving this incident.

“A vital incident investigation has commenced, and the incident might be referred to the Unbiased Police Conduct Authority (IPCA), as is commonplace process for any matter involving the discharge of a police firearm.”
