Bleach, the chemical compound sodium hypochlorite, is a disinfectant. There’s a distinction between cleansing and disinfecting, says Katie Sullivan, director of difficulty communications on the American Cleansing Institute, an business commerce group. “Cleansing is the bodily removing of filth, germs, and particles by scrubbing, washing, and rinsing,” she says. Disinfecting entails killing any remaining germs on a floor after it’s been cleaned.
