Uyghur human rights activist condemns death sentences in Bangkok bombing

A Bangkok courtroom on Thursday sentenced two Uyghur males to loss of life for triggering a bomb explosion which killed twenty and injured over 100 others over a decade in the past.

“The deaths and accidents attributable to the assault have been a horrible tragedy, and the victims and their households deserve justice,” Rebiya Kadeer of the Worldwide Uyghur Human Rights and Democracy Basis (IUHRDF) instructed RFA.

“Nonetheless, justice can’t be achieved by means of proceedings that go away vital questions unanswered concerning due course of, the remedy of defendants, and the reliability of key proof,” Kadeer added.

No group claimed accountability for the Erawan Shrine bombing in central Bangkok on Aug. 17, 2015, however hypothesis referred to as it an act of retaliation towards the compelled deportation of greater than 109 Uyghurs from Thailand a month earlier.

Shortly after the bombing, Thai police named 17 suspects. Arrested have been two Uyghurs, Adem Karadag (alias Bilal Mohammed) and Yusufu Mieraili, who went on trial in 2016 for planting explosives. Each have denied all fees introduced towards them

Upon listening to the decision delivered by a four-judge panel on Thursday, Mieraili shouted “Injustice!” within the courtroom in each English and Thai.

“RIP Thailand’s justice system. I don’t settle for any of this,” Mieraili added. “I didn’t do something unsuitable.”

In the course of the trial, prosecutors introduced proof that Mieraili and Karadag had been close to the shrine across the time of the explosion, that that they had communicated with one another by phone, and {that a} taxi driver had transported them away from the world after the incident.

The judges said that though the defendants had denied committing the crime, that they had didn’t refute the proof introduced towards them. The courtroom granted each males 30 days to file an enchantment.

Protection lawyer Choochat Kanpai instructed reporters they “will enchantment the ruling as a result of there are various facets of the case that the courtroom has not totally thought-about, together with the remedy of the defendants in the course of the proceedings.”

The last decade-long trial was beset by delays as a result of coronavirus pandemic and issues securing translators.

Seven Chinese language vacationers have been among the many fatalities when explosives—apparently left in a backpack—detonated.

Beijing welcomed the loss of life sentences.

“The attackers have been completely inhumane and very heinous,” international ministry spokesman Lin Jian instructed reporters.

“China helps Thailand in conducting the trial in accordance with the legislation and severely punishing the murderers.”

Thailand deported 40 Uyghurs to China in February 2025 regardless of warnings from human rights teams that they might face persecution on their return, drawing swift condemnation from the United Nations.

“These actions have bolstered issues that choices involving Uyghurs in Thailand could also be influenced by political and financial concerns linked to Beijing moderately than by worldwide human rights obligations,” Rebiya Kadeer instructed RFA.

“In opposition to this background, it’s troublesome for a lot of within the Uyghur neighborhood to have faith that this verdict was reached completely free from political affect,” Kadeer stated.
