Science-fiction cinema followers are consuming nicely in 2026, with films like Conflict Machine, Mission Hail Mary, The Finish of Oak Avenue, Dune: Half Three, Disclosure Day, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and The Canine Stars lighting up screens all year long. Whereas we all know what audiences consider these choices, due to websites like Rotten Tomatoes and seemingly limitless social media reactions, it’s uncommon for a titan of the trade like Steven Spielberg to weigh in. Fortunately, Empire lately caught up with the Disclosure Day director and obtained him to debate a few of his favourite gems to grace the silver display.
Spielberg on Villeneuve’s Dune being a few of his favourite films ever
“Lately, I’ve liked the Dune films. They’re amongst my favourite science-fiction films, not only recently, however of all time. Particularly the second movie,” Spielberg defined to Empire. “I feel [Part Two] is the most effective film Denis [Villeneuve] has ever made. I can’t wait to see the third one. I’m certain he’ll present it to me early. I’m such a fan of his.”
Along with displaying his love for Villeneuve’s interpretation of Frank Herbert‘s Dune novels, Spielberg expressed his admiration for Zach Cregger’s Weapons, which he thinks is a pressure of nature within the horror style.
Spielberg on the fun of Zach Cregger’s Weapons
“I haven’t directed a horror movie but, and I’ve all the time needed to, and sometime I’ll. However there have been some nice horror movies out already that fulfill that itch,” Spielberg says. “After I see an awesome horror movie like Weapons, I don’t have an itch I have to scratch. I see Weapons, and it doesn’t make me wish to make a horror movie that’s as scary or scarier than Weapons. It satisfies me so utterly, it really arrests my want to sometime make a extremely, actually scary film.”
That’s excessive reward for each Dune and Weapons coming from one in all cinema’s best residing filmmakers. Though now all I can take into consideration is Spielberg directing a horror film. What would that appear to be? Would he attempt for an R-rated affair, or hold it PG-13 so households can benefit from the expertise too? Would he method an alien horror movie? I don’t see Spielberg venturing into slasher territory. It might be psychological horror. Then once more, if he has no want to faucet the horror style, let sleeping canine lie.
Both manner, we’ve obtained Disclosure Day to look ahead to, which involves theaters on June 17, 2026. The upcoming sci-fi movie, directed and co-written by Spielberg with David Koepp, stars Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, Colin Firth, and extra. The story revolves round somebody proving, past a shadow of a doubt, that aliens exist. How would you react? Tell us within the feedback part under.
