Romanian fighter jets on Friday and Saturday morning shot down two drones that had been violating the nation’s airspace.
On Saturday morning, Romanian radar “detected one other unauthorized penetration of the nationwide airspace by a drone working within the neighborhood of the Ukrainian border” and two Romanian F-16 jets shot it down in an unpopulated space near the border, the Romanian protection ministry mentioned in a press release. Romania already shot down one other drone on Friday.
Romanian International Minister Oana Toiu mentioned that the drone shot down on Friday “was a Shahed-type drone, the identical type Russia launches, evening after evening, towards Ukraine.”
“Two incursions in 48 hours will not be an accident, they’re a sample, and our reply to that sample is consistency: detection, interception, safety of our residents, full transparency with our allies,” Toiu mentioned.
In a social media put up, European Council President António Costa “commend[ed] the Romanian authorities for his or her swift and efficient response.”
