Border czar Tom Homan mentioned Sunday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement brokers would stay at airports till TSA officers are in a position to resume regular operations.

“We’re going to proceed an ICE presence there, and till the airports really feel like they’re in 100%, you recognize, in a posture the place they will do regular operations,” Homan mentioned in an interview on CBS Information’ “Face the Nation.” “So if much less TSA brokers come again, which means we’ll maintain extra ICE brokers there.”

His feedback come days after President Donald Trump directed the Division of Homeland Safety to pay Transportation Safety Administration officers because the partial shutdown continues. Homan mentioned in a separate Sunday interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” that TSA officers will “hopefully” receives a commission by Monday or Tuesday.

Requested on CNN whether or not ICE brokers would go away airports as soon as TSA officers begin getting paid, Homan mentioned, “We’ll see.”

“It relies upon what number of TSA brokers come again to work, what number of TSA brokers have truly stop and don’t have any plan of coming again to work. I’m working very intently with TSA administrator and the ICE director to resolve what airport wants what,” he mentioned.

“God bless the lads ladies of ICE,” Homan continued, saying that ICE brokers had been “plugging these holes” at airports. Homan mentioned that ICE brokers had been serving to with duties like identification checks and defending exit lanes.

Fight over funding for TSA continues in Congress

Roughly 500 TSA staff have stop for the reason that begin of the shutdown, in response to DHS. As well as, hundreds of TSA staff have known as out of labor because the shutdown stretched on and TSA workers went with out paychecks. The shortages have led to lengthy wait instances at safety checkpoints throughout the nation, with a few of the hardest hit airports seeing hourslong strains.

A prime TSA official testified earlier than Congress final week that it takes roughly 4 to 6 months to coach transportation safety officers.

On Friday, Home Republicans handed a short-term DHS funding invoice that doesn’t have sufficient help within the Senate to turn out to be regulation. Home Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., rejected a Senate-passed invoice that will have funded all of DHS apart from immigration enforcement and deportation operations.

The DHS shutdown turned the longest partial authorities shutdown in U.S. historical past on Sunday, and there’s no clear path ahead for funding the division.
