LONDON — Russian opposition chief Alexei Navalny was poisoned by the Kremlin with a deadly toxin derived from the pores and skin of poison dart frogs, 5 European nations mentioned Saturday.

The international ministries of the U.Ok., France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands mentioned evaluation of samples from Navalny, who died two years in the past, “have conclusively confirmed the presence of epibatidine.” It’s a toxin present in poison dart frogs in South America that isn’t discovered naturally in Russia, they mentioned.

The nations mentioned in a joint assertion that “Russia had the means, motive and alternative to manage this poison.” They mentioned they have been reporting Russia to the Group for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for a breach of the Chemical Weapons Conference.

British International Secretary Yvette Cooper mentioned “Russia noticed Navalny as a risk. Through the use of this type of poison the Russian state demonstrated the despicable instruments it has at its disposal and the overwhelming concern it has of political opposition.”

'Patriot' is a posthumous memoir by the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny

Navalny, who crusaded towards official corruption and staged huge anti-Kremlin protests as President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe, died within the Arctic penal colony in February 2024. He was serving a 19-year sentence that he believed to be politically motivated.

Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, mentioned final 12 months that two unbiased labs had discovered that her husband was poisoned shortly earlier than he died. Navalnaya has repeatedly blamed Putin for Navalny’s loss of life, one thing Russian officers have vehemently denied.

Navalnaya mentioned Saturday that she had been “sure from the primary day” that her husband had been poisoned, “however now there may be proof.”

“Putin killed Alexei with chemical weapon,” she wrote on social community X, calling Putin “a assassin” who “have to be held accountable.”

Russian authorities mentioned that the politician grew to become ailing after a stroll and died from pure causes.

Even in death, Alexei Navalny hasn't given up the fight against corruption in Russia

In 2020, Navalny was poisoned with a nerve agent assault he blamed on the Kremlin, which all the time denied involvement. His household and allies fought to have him flown to Germany for therapy and restoration. 5 months later, he returned to Russia, the place he was instantly arrested and imprisoned for the final three years of his life.
