The household of a Colombian fisherman killed in a US strike within the Caribbean has filed a proper criticism towards such assaults with the Inter-American Fee on Human Rights. The petition was filed on Tuesday by US human rights lawyer Dan Kovalik. It alleges that Alejandro Carranza was killed when the USA struck his boat off the coast of Colombia on September 15. Kovalik advised CNN that the household seeks compensation and an finish to comparable killings: “These killings are towards worldwide regulation. They’re towards US regulation. We would like this to cease, and we expect that is a minimum of a primary step to having that occur.”The criticism names US secretary of defence Pete Hegseth as liable for ordering the bombing of boats like Carranza’s and claimed that his conduct was ratified by US President Donald Trump.Since early September, US has carried out a minimum of 22 strikes on alleged drug trafficking boats within the Caribbean and Pacific, killing a minimum of 83 individuals. The US maintains the strikes adjust to the Regulation of Armed Battle and has stated the boats have been linked to armed drug cartels. Trump claimed that the September 15 strike killed three “narcoterrorists from Venezuela” transporting medicine to the USA.Nonetheless, Kovalik says Carranza was merely fishing for marlin and tuna when he was killed. “That’s what he was doing. That was his occupation and his vocation.” Colombian President Gustavo Petro has described Carranza as a lifelong fisherman with no ties to the drug commerce. He added that Carranza could have sometimes carried prohibited items because of monetary pressures, however “his actions do not deserve the loss of life penalty.”Kovalik has additionally represented President Petro, who was sanctioned by the US on October 24 over alleged involvement within the world drug commerce. Petro has denied the allegations.
